Are Scared Straight Programs a good idea?


Guidelines

1.) Each member in your group is responsible for one question. This is a team grade. Your actions not only effect yourself but everyone in your group.

2.) A minimum of three paragraphs are required for your explanation of the question that is assigned to you. You must answer in detail and support your side the best you can.

3.) You must reference the Scholastic Scope Article at least once in your explanation.

4.) A peer must edit your rough draft before the final draft is turned in by Tuesday.

1.) What does the term "Scared Straight" mean in that context? Do you think this type of program is effective?

3.) How would you feel if you were one of the teens in the Scared Straight Program?

4.) What psychological toll does it have on the kid's that participate in the scared straight programs?
5.) Why do you think the inmates in the Scared Straight programs want to participate? What do you think their motivations are for participating?
6.) Many of the young people in scared straight programs talk about the tough issues they face in their homes and communities. What are some of the reasons they say they engage in illegal or bad behavior? How much responsibility to you think they should take for their actions?
7.) If you were in charge of juvenile justice in your area, would you support this type of program? If so, why? If not, what kinds of programs do you think will help young people get on a healthier path?
